THE DARK SIDE OF EARTH – CAN YOU STILL SEE THE STARS? 🌌
Not all that shines is starlight!
For Day 5 of the #30DayMapChallenge, exploring the world after dark through satellite-observed night-time illumination. Mapping how artificial lights illuminate our planet and revealing the darker regions where the night sky may still offer a glimpse of the stars.
Data swizzling using #FME from Safe Software and Cartograph-ing with #QGIS.
Data Integration: Country-wise night-time radiance data processed using #FME.
Visualization: Global choropleth map based on Average Night-time Radiance (2023), measured in nW/cm²/sr.
Data Sources:World Population Review – Darkest Countries – Average Radiance 2023.
NASA VIIRS – Satellite-based night-time lights observations.
Natural Earth – Country boundaries.
